Our first glimpse of the African nation of Wakanda debuted during the NBA Finals on ABC to staggering numbers and garnished more tweets in its reveal than the game itself. The Black Panther teaser broke into the Top 10 most watched trailers within the first 24-hours, unseating Star Wars: The Force Awakens second teaser for the 10th spot on the list.

Overall, the teaser received 89 million views on its first day; 19 million of which came from those viewing the NBA Finals during the debut and the vast remaining sum came from different online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube. With 349,000 mentions on Twitter, Black Panther is currently the second most tweeted teaser within 24 hours, right behind the Star Wars: The Last Jedi reveal in May.

For the most part, trailer view tracking has served as a powerful metric to predict how well a movie will perform at the box office – with the exception of the Fifty Shades Darker trailer, sitting in 5th place, which went on to grossly under-perform upon release. But if Wonder Woman‘s surprising reception as a box office hit (despite its trailer views not even breaking into the Top 20) is any indication of Black Panther’s potential then it would appear that fortune will be smiling upon the nation of Wakanda next February.

What were your thoughts on the teaser? Do you think the Wakandan King will dethrone the Amazon Princess at the box office next year?
