Last week there were rumors going around of some marketing moves being made by Marvel Studios early this week. It seems like these rumors held some weight because today we were treated to a new reel released straight from the studio itself. The reel, containing narrative dialogue by the late Stan Lee, takes through a few iconic moments of the last 20+ Marvel Studios films and ends with a big bang as the sequel titles to both Black Panther and Captain Marvel are revealed as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels, respectively.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is less of a surprise given Director Ryan Coogler has gone on record stating that the film and a future Disney+ series would heavily focus on the fictional nation of Wakanda. It’s also fitting given the passing of the Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman.

The Marvels is a bit more surprising as it removes itself from being a direct sequel in reference to the title. This is a new one for Marvel Studios. They’ve always been heavily into expanding on the legacies of their titular characters. One recent example is the fourth installment to the Captain America franchise rumored to be helmed by Sam Wilson. But this also makes sense as the movie is confirmed to feature Monica Rambeau who has donned the Captain Marvel mantle in the comics and Kamala Khan who is set to debut as Ms. Marvel on Disney+. Hell, maybe the even have Blue Marvel planned for this movie.

These are both huge surprises to take in this morning and give us a good idea of what to expect with the direction of both properties. They also give us a lot of questions about the future of the properties following these film’s releases. As predicted Marvel Studios is back up full steam and ready to break the box office again from 2021 onward.
