Because of the size and scale of Avengers: Infinity War, it was inevitable that some characters wouldn’t get to shine, a fact that most of us expected. What we didn’t expect were the characters who wouldn’t get that shine. Captain America in particular never got that big sweeping moment we all thought would happen in the Wakanda Siege. Him and Black Widow get relegated to characters on the narrative’s periphery, a contrast from their significance in the first two Avengers films. Screenwriters Markus and McFeely revealed to Buzzfeed that this was all intentional and that characters like Cap and Nat would get their due come Avengers 4.

Some characters will be better served in movie 2 after this event. We were making some choices based on some characters we knew were going to leave us at the end of the first movie, so they got highlighted in the first movie. And some who were going to be in the second movie more maybe got less attention or less screentime [in Infinity War] — I’m thinking of Cap and Natasha, specifically. It’s about the story we wanted to tell in movie 2, mostly.

They also teased the story goodies that await Hawkeye, who was totally absent in Avengers: Infinity War, in Avengers 4.

We like Hawkeye. We like Hawkeye so much we gave him a really good story.

The fact that all the OG Avengers weren’t disintegrated at the end of Avengers: Infinity War was something that boggled my mind. A part of me felt that the snap would have an extra oomph to it if say, Black Widow or Hulk turn into ash in the end. Hearing these screenwriters say this was all part of their design for Avengers 4 is assuring. Nothing would make me happier than seeing the OG Avengers get back to the forefront full circle. And speaking of circle, if they do a 360 shot with all the OGs again, I am going to bawl in the theater.
