Later this year, Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will kick off with Captain America: Civil War. This movie will deal with the fallout from the attack on Sokovia, Ultron, and see our heroes go head to head.
The Russo brothers have returned Civil War after to direct nailing Captain America: The Winter Soldier and before they head off to direct the massive Avengers: Infinity War. When we return to the Captain America franchise, the world will be in a very different place and so will the characters. While talking to Comicbook.com at a recent con, the directors answered where this next installment picks up.
We like to say that the amount of time that has passed in between films is the amount of time that has passed in the movies. So, it’s about that amount time. We find Cap leading the Avengers. He’s tutoring or mentoring Scarlet Witch in the beginning of the movie and bringing her into the fold. We find them on a mission at the start of the film. The effect that Ultron has had on everyone certainly is central to the storytelling of the movie. It’s very strong. We’re dealing with issues of collateral damage, imperialism, what rights do super heroes have to pursue villains across borders. It’s very politically minded. Cap’s dealing with all of that at the beginning.
This is not a surprising answer given what we know about the plot and how Marvel operates. It is, however, interesting that Scarlet Witch is the apprentice to Cap in the movie. Hopefully this means we will see an even more powerful Scarlet Witch, something that Elizabeth Olsen has even teased.
Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
