Tonight’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally going to bring us the Secret Warriors – a team that has been teased since before season three premiered last year – led by Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet). They will be tasked with rescuing the S.H.I.E.L.D. team from Giyera, who has captured them on the Zephyr in last week’s episode. With very little information on the actual conditions of her fellow agents, tonight’s episode, titled “The Team”, will see Daisy arm her Inhuman team of Secret Warriors with inspirational speeches and charges into battle. While doing press for the upcoming episode, Bennet took some time to sit down with the folks at TV Line to tease what we can expect from the episode and what it’s like to find her character in a new leadership role.

When it comes to calling in the Secret Warriors – which currently only consists of four members; two of which are at their respective homes – how easy is it to bring them in? We know that Daisy has provided them with wrist-watches/receivers that’ll let them know when they’re needed, but surely it’s more difficult than just triggering an alert, right? According to Bennet, it’s not as complicated as one would assume.

I think S.H.I.E.L.D. has a pretty convenient way. I mean, if it was Chloe assembling the Secret Warriors, I’d be, like, sending out tweets. Like, “Yo-Yo. Where are you? You’re not picking up.” But S.H.I.E.L.D. has it down to this cool, very super-hero, super-spy watch, and there are signals when they’re needed. I kind of geek out about it! But yeah, we finally have the Secret Warriors together. It’s not under the circumstances I think they wanted to get together in, but…

The great thing about last week’s episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. was that it gave Daisy a true reason to call the Secret Warriors in, as noted by the folks at TV Line. This is something that Bennet agrees with, noting that it was a great excuse to order the team to come together again.

Totally. It’s never going to be like, “OK. I’m ready as a leader, you guys are ready as a team. Let’s go out and see what happens!” It was a great excuse for them to [get together].

Of course, when asked by TV Line who Bennet would consider the Coulson of the group, the actress immediately reaffirmed that Daisy is the leader here. She’s leading the Secret Warriors, and even though it may take her some time to adjust to the leadership role, she knows what is expected of her courtesy of her time working alongside Coulson as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

Daisy. She’s the leader now, which is also a big step forward for her as a character and for me as an actress. She’s kind of finding her sea legs, but I think she has what it takes. She has obviously the talent, the ability, the strength, but it also takes practice. It’s something that you learn over time, with different situations and thinking under pressure. Being a leader is tough. You have to motivate but you have to make the right decisions and you can’t be selfish. But she has a good mentor in Coulson.

The progression is more than just her character, but she is learning to be leader behind the scenes, as well. Daisy and Bennet growing as leaders while on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is something Bennet spoke about at length in an interview we brought you yesterday. However, Bennet acknowledges to TV Line that, while the role she’s portraying now is nothing like the role she originally auditioned for back in 2013, she’s excited with where her character is now.

I know! I’m playing a completely different character than I auditioned for, but it’s cool. It’s crazy to think about where we’re at.

Back to the Secret Warriors, one thing we’ve noticed with the little bit of screen-time shared by the gang (so far) is that each member has a vastly different personality, as well as different power sets, making it a bit chaotic when they all get together as one group. When asked what it was like to see these characters work together among their differences, Bennet admitted it’s difficult at times.

There are always difficulties, I think, when you have a team of different people, but Daisy has been weeding out people for a while now. Her main concern for some time has been trying to find a team of people who are not only talented and powerful enough to get the job done, but also have the right motives for what they’re doing. So, between Natalia [Cordova-Buckley], Juan Pablo [Raba] and Luke [Mitchell], who play Lincoln, Joey and Yo-Yo, I think we have a really good chemistry as a team. And off-camera, we have, like, way too much fun. We all are in a text thread called “Secret Warriors” and we text each other every day.

Bennet also hints that as the Inhumans come together, their powers become stronger in some way.

I think their powers all together really make for something interesting. It’s almost like they’re different chemicals and when you use them together, it’s like, “Oh. We could do that? Not a problem.” That’s always fun to play with, but also you get to see that this is such a new team, and what’s reminiscent of the first season is you see this team kind of work together for the first time and the excitement of getting something done, like, “Oh s–t. That was awesome. Did you see what I just did? That was so cool.” The kind of energy that Skye had in the first season is back with Joey and with Yo-Yo.

Of course, Daisy and her group of Secret Warriors aren’t the only ones with powers this season. We’ve seen bits of what Hive is capable of in recent episodes, but we still don’t know exactly what he’s capable of, although Bennet hints at Hive’s powers being more powerful than we realize.

I think you’ll find that that is more powerful than anything, because that can put people under sway and then he has full control of anyone he does that to. Essentially, he has everyone’s power. He has the power of any Inhuman that he does that to.

If they are human, it kills them. If they’re Inhuman, it does other things….

Looking ahead, as Daisy finds herself in a leadership position, can we expect her to find herself in a tight place? Much as we saw with Coulson when he made the decision to kill Ward during the mid-season finale? According to the actress, we can expect something big to happen soon enough, something that’ll put her in a tight place, while also changing the series going forward.

Oh yeah. Yeah. I would say that this episode is broken into two parts, and moving forward, nothing is going to be the same for the rest of the series. Here on out, this episode is the biggest game changer for the rest of the entire series of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air episode 3×17, “The Team“, tonight on ABC. Be sure to tune in!
