Captain America: Civil War was filled with fight scenes featuring friends and Avengers throwing punches at each other. The epic fight scene at the airport was more than a charging battle scene, where two teams went in with guns blazing – a scene that was viewed as taken straight from the comics by moviegoers. The fight had many one-on-one encounters that added up, one after the other, with nearly each Avenger taking on one another at some point. Evidently, though, this line-up originally included a fight between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) – two characters we’ve seen develop a close friendship since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier – which was later cut. Captain America: Civil War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained what we missed to Fandango.
“There was a good fight between Captain America and Black Widow that we lost mainly due to time,” Christopher Markus told Fandango.
With many one-on-one fights, it was already clear that some of the characters that had a long history with each other, such as Black Widow and Hawkeye, were having trouble throwing punches at each other. The writers explained that more of these fights would not have added to the greater narrative.
“[Cap and Black Widow] clearly have a deep relationship even though they’re clearly on opposite sides, and you never know how many times you need to hit that over the course of the movie,” added McFeely. “I think it works without this fight, but we certainly didn’t know if it would.”
Of course, each of those little battles had a different ending. Who would have won the battle between Cap and Black Widow?
“I guess Cap did,” Mcfeely said. “Let’s just say he got away in the moment, how about that?”
