Netflix is quite well known for being tight-lipped when it comes to their ratings. We have released a variety of articles from data analysts stating that they have found a way to decipher what shows had the largest audience. In a surprising twist, Netflix finally offered a small glimpse at their ratings and revealed some of their most popular shows. In a rather humorous press release, they revealed that 8,4 million have been very active in their binge. They saw a 2o time increase in launch day finishers from 2013 to 2016. Canada even managed to beat out the United States when it came to binging shows.

Marvel fans will be delighted to know that even if reception was mixed, The defenders actually managed to nab the third spot of shows that were finished within the first 24 hours. It’s eight-episode run does make it perfect for binging. Moreover, it does introduce its main characters and main plotline without forcing viewers to watch any of the previous shows. It still did not manage to beat out Fuller House and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which are both continuation of existing shows with a cult following.

What is rather surprising is the fact that only The Defenders managed to make it into the Top 20 shows. Most marketing analytics pointed to Daredevils second season as the most viewed show. There is a difficulty in comparing these results, as the basis for their ranking is much different. For example, the analysists from Jumpshot stated that Defenders was the least viewed show of the bunch. They culminated a variety of data to assess what show had the highest percentage of viewers over the course of 30 days, which turned out to be season two of Daredevil. This was set as a benchmark to compare the viewership numbers too. In the end, it is difficult to say what value these numbers truly hold, as Netflix is a subscription-based service. As long as they are satisfied with the show’s quality and they help boost their subscription numbers, we might see quite a few more Marvel-Netflix shows down the road.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Did you binge The Defenders within the first 24 hours?
