Ever since the completion of the Disney-Fox merger earlier this year, Marvel fans everywhere have been speculating on how Marvel Studios will reboot previously Fox-owned properties, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four, into the MCU. While it seems unlikely any Fox properties will appear in Phase Four – Kevin Feige has made it clear that the acquisition of the Fox characters won’t change their current five-year plan – a new rumor points towards Marvel already making plans for one certain mutant to make his MCU debut – Deadpool.
According to MCU Cosmic, Marvel is currently considering three potential ways of bringing Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth into the wider MCU. While the first is perhaps the most expected – Marvel simply moving ahead with a third Deadpool movie and using it as a soft-reboot for the character – the other two are far more exciting.
Apparently, one idea is for Deadpool to make his debut in the Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel (presumably set for release some time in 2021, given the typical Spider-Man release schedule). Teaming Deadpool up with one of the MCU’s biggest and most bankable characters would certainly be a major way of having the character debut, and would appear to suggest Feige & Co. have a potentially big future for the character planned.
The other possibility is Deadpool receiving a PG-13 Disney+ series, which would certainly be a change of pace for the character – though not unprecedented, given the release of Once Upon a Deadpool, a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2, last Christmas. Given Kevin Feige has stated that Marvel’s Disney+ shows will all be important to the future of the MCU, this approach would again appear to set up Deadpool as a key-player moving forward, and would give us a good chance to get used to Marvel’s take on the character before he inevitably ventures into the wider MCU.
While these are all very exciting possibilities, it’s important to remember these are, as of now, just rumors, and it’s impossible to know whether any of these ideas will come to pass, or if they’re even actually being discussed. Still, we know Marvel intends to move forward with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and if nothing else, these rumors give us something to speculate about as we continue to wait for official word from Marvel Studios on their plans for the previously Fox-owned properties.
