After previously reporting the chances of Doctor Strange winning an Academy Award a few months back, we now have confirmation that the film is indeed being nominated for Best Visual Effects in the 89th Academy Awards next month. It’s another prestigious nod from an awarding body following the film’s nomination from the BAFTAs. Nominated in the same category are Deepwater Horizon, Jungle Book and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story among others.

This is not the first time an MCU film has been nominated for the most prestigious film award in Hollywood. During the 85th Academy Awards, the Avengers was nominated for the same category but lost to Life of Pi. There’s no telling which film might win this year (even though it’s likely Jungle Book) but we’re banking on the good doctor to take home Oscar for the very first time.
Doctor Strange has truly been a success for Marvel regardless of the awards it doesn’t win. Grossing $650 million worldwide, garnering 15 award nominations, and scoring a 90% from the most important quality aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Doctor Strange has truly been a success for Marvel regardless of the awards it doesn’t win. This Oscar nomination is a fitting end to a spectacular theatrical run. Congrats to VFX wizards Stephane Ceretti, Richard Bluff, Vincent Cirelli and Paul Corbould for the nomination!
