When it comes to the major awards season, the films of the MCU rarely get accolades. While on the TV side, Jessica Jones has been able to take home many honors, and the movies have been able to gather critical acclaim, the awards season tends to lean toward the independent film scene, rather than Marvel blockbusters.
Today, the official list for all nominees for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards are in, and it looks like one Marvel film will be breaking the trend. Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, has been nominated for three BAFTA awards. The spellbinding movie is in the running for the best Special Visual Effects, Makeup and Hair, and Production Design.
Tom Holland is also nominated for the best Rising Star Award, as previously covered by MCUExchange on January 5th. Along with Benedict Cumberbatch and Spidey himself, there are a couple of MCU stars nominated as well, though not for Marvel related work. Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver) is in the running for supporting actor for Nocturnal Animals. And Mahershala Ali (Cottonmouth, in Luke Cage) is competing with him as a supporting actor for his role in Moonlight.
Doctor Strange has been nominated for several awards in 2016 and has won the Hollywood Visual Effects Awards for the Hollywood Film Awards. So far, though, its nomination is pending for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The BAFTA winners will be announced at its award show on February 12, 2017.
