With all of the Marvel properties being released in 2018, it might be easy to forget that we are also getting Sony’s Venom at the beginning of October. If you’re confused about where this film fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, don’t worry; you’re not alone! After multiple confusing statements by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal, all that we seem to know so far is that Venom, as well as Sony’s upcoming Silver And Black film, will work as “adjuncts” to the MCU. Whatever that means…
Finally, thanks to IGN, we have our first look at Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock in the upcoming movie.
Yep, looks like Tom Hardy! Ok, so while the image doesn’t show us much, there are actually a couple things that we can gather. First of all, it seems like they are going the comic-book-accurate route of having Eddie Brock doing at bit of reporting work. If you zoom and enhance on the notebook in the image, you’ll notice a couple lines that stand out:
“So how exactly does the Life Foundation go about testing its pharmaceuticals?”
“What about the allegations your empire is built on?”
The Life Foundation certainly has a presence in the comics, especially in the Venom storylines. The organization primarily started out as an advanced nuclear fall-out shelter for the wealthy and famous, but they also worked extensively with symbiotes. Ahhh, if only the rumors of last year’s Sony film Life being a secret Venom prequel were true. It would be too perfect…
Along with the first image, we also received our first look at the Venom panel at Brazil’s Comic Con Experience from December. In the video, director Ruben Fleisher reveals a brief look at the San Francisco set, as well as a look into which comics the plot of the movie will be drawing from.
“We want to be as true as possible to the comic with our film…our story is primarily based on the Lethal Protector and the Planet of theSymbiotes book.”
These details only serve to get fans more intrigued about the upcoming movie, but there are still so many questions. Where does it fit in the Marvel Universe, especially in relation to Spider-Man? Will it truly be connected? What about those rumors that Woody Harrelson is joining the cast? We will keep you up to date as more information comes in.
Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate, and hits theaters October 5, 2018.
