As the September 20th premiere date for the fourth season of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. creeps closer, more and more discussion has begun about who the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., revealed in the season three finale to no longer be Phil Coulson, could be.

As per usual, the studio has been silent about the character, not even revealing a name for us to mull over for the last month of our Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. off-season. However, TV Line has reaffirmed that the character (to be portrayed by Jason O’Mara) has “Marvel roots [that] go back to the 1940s”, as initially revealed in the press release following his casting.

This could potentially mean that we’ve met the character’s familial predecessors in Agent Carter, Captain America: The First Avenger, or possibly even Ant-Man.

O’Mara himself also revealed a bit about the character to TV Line, saying “It’s a manly name.” To go along with O’Mara’s quote, TV Line was able to reveal an exclusive first look of the actor in costume. Of course, to no one’s surprise, the photo isn’t exactly very telling, but it’s fun to see something a little over a month out from the show’s return.
