SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR BELOW. READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILM. THOUGH YOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE BY NOW.

There is no lack of the unexpected in Avengers: Infinity War. What likely is the most emotional and subversive MCU film to date, Avengers: Infinity War delivers the first unexpected moment with Gamora’s untimely death at the hands of her father. Like a majority of fans, I was astounded to see it happen. Never did I expect Gamora to bite it in the film, let alone halfway through the film. Zoe Saldana shares those feelings with the world. Speaking with the LA Times in depth about her role and Gamora’s fate in the film, Saldana revealed what it was like watching the film for the first time.

I was surprised by all the other stories that were not a part of the story that I shot. A lot of Gamora’s involvement in this whole event takes place with certain characters [namely, the Guardians of the Galaxy], so obviously, she would be completely impervious to whatever is going on outside of that. So, for me as an actress, I was kind of like that as well. But I knew [about] and I was very happy with the twist that they were doing. I just kept asking, “OK, am I going to…are you guys going to, you know…is Gamora going to…?” [Laughs] Which I think is the question so many actors [in the film] were having anyway.

Saldana also spoke about how that twist came to be and her reaction to learning about it early in the production process.

I learned very early on. The producers called me and they told me. And of course there’s a shock to your system. I’m so grateful, this run has been amazing, but you’re so not even ready for that. But then once some of the things were discussed, I understood that it just makes sense. In order for you to understand the degree of evil that lies within the core of Thanos, you have to circle in on his own children. So I completely understood. I loved being a part of this unforgettable journey.

When asked about what the future holds for Gamora, the big question on the minds of people who are aware about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Saldana had this to say.

I don’t know. [Laughs] For the sake of the devoted fans out there — we don’t want to rob them of an amazing experience. It’s all for them that we do what we do and we also protect what we do.

There is a very interesting article from the May 2017 issue of USA Today covering GOTG Vol. 2 saying that Zoe Saldana was in serious talks to return alongside Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Now given her comments about learning Gamora’s fate ahead of everyone else and how productions for both films overlapped, I’m guessing her death in Infinity War was written on the wall before Vol. 2 even came out.

To some degree, we know that the characters that vanished into dust via the snap will probably return at some point or another, as they would not kill off ongoing franchises like Black Panther so easily. While the characters who die before the snap are less than likely to return, Gamora’s situation feels peculiar. Her character was last seen dead as a sacrifice for Thanos to retrieve the Soul Stone. There’s a prevailing theory now that points to her being trapped in the stone and that its destruction could free her and as a result, bring her back from the dead. There’s a coyness to Saldana’s comments about not wanting to take away from the impact of Gamora’s death.

What is your theory? Do you think she will be back?
