We are finally getting some more news on Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel. Deadline revealed that actress Gemma Chan will be joining the film as a Kree named Minn-Erva. Chan will be staring opposite Constance Wu in the upcoming adaptation Crazy Rich Asians, Mary Queen of Scots alongside Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, as well as in the upcoming third season of AMC’s Humans. She is joining Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Brie Larson in Marvel Studios first 2019 film.
Minn-Erva was a Kree geneticist and spy in the comics, who came to earth under the disguise as Doctor Minerva to find Mar-Vell. Her goal was to unlock the hidden potential of the Kree’s genes, as she believed that Mar-Vell was the key to her success. No information is revealed on what exactly her role in the film will be, but her position as a geneticist might give her a key role in the creation of the MCU’s Captain Marvel. In the comics, Carol Danvers’ DNA fused with Mar-Vell’s after an explosion which resulted in her gaining his abilities. Maybe this time, the explosion could be the result of Minn-Erva’s failed experiment to harvest Mar-vell’s DNA that ends up giving Danvers her powers. The geneticist’s inclusion in the film could already hint at a major change of Danvers’ origins. Captain Marvel will be set in the 90s, so it will be interesting how this also affects the rest of the MCU moving forward.
What are your thoughts on the casting? What role do you think Gemma Chan will have in the film?
