Here’s one bit of news no one ever expected. Tyler Bates, known for his musical work on James Gunn films such as Super, Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy and non-Gunn films Watchmen and John Wick, will be indeed scoring Marvel/Netflix’s upcoming The Punisher. The report comes from Filmmusicreporter.com, a site specializing in all things film and TV soundtracks.

Tyler Bates scoring The Punisher is monumental news as it marks one of the first film-to-TV crossovers for one of the main creative forces behind the film division with the first one being Joss Whedon‘s directorial stint on the pilot of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. followed by Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito’s executive producer credit on Agent Carter. And it’s also fantastic that the television crew booked someone so talented for the show. I know the Guardians score tends to be overshadowed by the prestige of the Awesome Mix soundtrack but each time I sit down and listen to Bates’ work, I can’t help but feel chills listening to his themes. Black Tears is still one of the best pieces of music ever done for the MCU in my opinion.

And in case some of you didn’t know, Tyler is also known for his collaborations with Marilyn Manson whose record The Pale Emperor he co-wrote and produced. With Iron Fist and Luke Cage going for the hip-hop influence, I wouldn’t mind if Bates’ industrial metal and alternative rock influence seeps through his Punisher score to truly distinguish the show’s musical identity.

While waiting for what Tyler Bates has in store for us in The Punisher, we can check out his work in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, coming out in theaters real soon.
