The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel will be continuing the tales our favorite space heroes, but with their upcoming appearance in Avengers: Infinity War and the recent confirmation for a third sequel happening, many wondered how exactly the story will continue. It could either simply build upon the second film, while including references to their meeting with the Avengers, or will we see more elements from the Avengers become a part of the film, similar to how Captain America: Civil War seemed closer to an Avengers sequel rather than that of Captain America. Director James Gunn offered some more insight into what we can expect from the upcoming third instalment.
“I think really that the three movies work together as a whole, they’re going to tell one story. This is the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and we’re going to get to know the characters even better in the same way we got to know them much better in this film than the first one.”
The Guardians films seem to have a strong emphasis on family, as the first film was about Quill’s relationship with his mother and the sequel is introducing us to his father. The trailers also highlight how much the Guardians have grown together as a family, and with them getting new members that dynamic may be shaken up a bit. The relationship between Gamora and Nebula, as Thanos’ adopted children, has also played a major role in the last films.
“I wouldn’t have said yes if I didn’t have a fairly clear idea of where we were going and what we were going to do. I’m not a guy that’s just going to do it if I don’t have a vision for it. So, I’m very excited.”
It is great to see Gunn so enthusiastic about the franchise, and that he seems to have a clear goal ahead of him. While he did not go into detail how the Avengers could influence the upcoming threequel, it is still great to know that he had an entire story planned out. However with most films focusing on Quill’s family life, it is up in the air which relationship the third one could focus on. Maybe we could see him return and meet his grandfather once again, who we only briefly saw at the beginning of the first film, or perhaps he has a half-brother. There is a lot of potential in what direction the franchise can head.
Also, anyone wondering how Quill’s visit to earth could influence his third mixtape, Gunn promises that we can expect a very different direction.
Where do you think the third film could go? What do you want to see happen?
