Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been proving itself as another success for Marvel Studios and many wonder when we can expect the already announced third volume to hit theaters. With Marvel Studios focusing on finishing out its Phase 3 line-up, which will see two sequels in the Avengers franchise, it is a big question when the very different Phase 4 would arrive. Luckily, James Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, who plays Kraglin in the Guardians films, has offered a bit more insight into when we can expect work to start on the mysterious project.
“I know that James is being a little bit more patient this time around. Partially because some of what happens with the Guardians is dependent on what happens with them in Infinity War. And even though my brother’s a producer on Infinity War, those movies aren’t finished yet so until we kind of see where everything lands there that’s going to have some bearing on what happens with the Guardians. So it’s a little bit of a wait and see but I’m sure there are a lot of ideas already in the works.”
This makes a lot of sense, as not only does it offer Gunn enough time to work on the threequel and find the right place for the Guardians to continue their adventures after their big battle with Thanos alongside the Avengers. It also matches what Gunn has previously said, that led us to believe the third Guardians movie would come in 2020. The director is also heavily involved with the Avengers sequels, which may take up quite some time as he ensures that the characters he gave cinematic life are consistent throughout their appearances.
One interesting thing to note is that whatever transpires during Infinity War and its still unnamed sequel, it will have a major impact on the story of the third installment. With Gunn hinting at earth-based cosmic heroes potentially making an appearance and the future team line-up beyond a third installment being quite different, it would be interesting to see the third film to finish off the trilogy with a Thanos Imperative story-line. It would allow Nova to make an appearance, as part of the already established Nova Corp. and fight alongside the Guardians, as they hunt down a still alive Thanos after the events of the last Avengers films. Gunn has pointed out that he is not interested in the character of Nova, but his addition could open up the possibility for his son to take over as Nova in a future film series. In addition of them being chased by Adam Warlock, there is quite a lot of potential for the upcoming film.
