James Gunn has not lost his momentum, as just coming off of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the director has been heavily involved in establishing the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinemative Universe for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which will finally see the Guardians meet the Avengers. Many wondered if the upcoming third installment in the Guardians franchise would be the last time we will follow the current incarnation of the various characters, but Gunn teased some potential that will come out of the upcoming threequel.

We talk about it all the time. It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.

In a way, Gunn has established himself as the voice for the Cosmic adventures of this shared universe, as even the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok seems to have combined many aspects of his established side of the universe with some very classic Jack Kirby designs. It does make sense after establishing one of Marvel’s most out-there and surprising hits that he would have a strong say on what we can expect from the upcoming films. The big question remains what exactly we can expect to spin-off out of the Guardians film, as he does not go into too many specifics.

One potential is that Rocket and Groot might get their own film, as they have been given quite a lot of focus in the comics, especially in the very unique visual take by comic book artist Scottie Young. Exploring Rocket’s past and Halfworld would make for quite an interesting film, which could be quite expensive due to characters’ strong dependance on CGI. It would be great though to finally meet his soulmate Lylla and get more interactions between him and Cosmo. The last film also teased the arrival of Adam Warlock, who could become not only a very prominent member of the Guardians, but offers quite a lot of potential in his own series. Given his close-ties to Magus, we could see a rather interesting take on the cosmic universe and it’s most darkest sides. Another possibility would be to allow Star-Lord to explore the universe on his own after he is seperated by his friends, or rather family, which could allow his past with Yondu to be explored more. Personally, it would be rather interesting to give Yondu his own film, as there is a long history yet to explore while being a member of teh original Ravagers, as well as raising a young Quill.

What cosmic character and film would you like to explore beyond Guardians 3? Is there a concept you would love to explore in a future movie?
