Things appear to be heating up in the new clip from next week’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode entitled Wake Up.

The clip features Coulson, Mace, Talbot, Daisy, Gemma, and the May LMD (who is now aware of the “LMD” part of “the May LMD”) discussing what seems like a public relations opportunity but is, in reality, and in true spy agency fashion, something else entirely.

The discussion centers on an event in which Daisy goes to the Capitol to very publicly sign the Sokovia Accords…the UN agreement that precipitated the division in the superhero community in Captain America: Civil War. However, as Gemma’s questioning of Daisy doing such a thing (and Coulson letting her do such a thing) shows all too well, not everyone at the table is aware of the whole plan.

In fact, as Coulson reveals, the signing ceremony puts the Watchdog-loving Senator Nadeer in a known place…that isn’t her office, which is where Coulson will be planting surveillance equipment to “keep an eye” on her. The signing is just a diversion…something that Talbot is hearing the first of and is not happy about saying that this new S.H.I.E.L.D. must be “above reproach” and not doing things like, you know, planting bugs in a US Senator’s office.

Noticeably silent during this discussion is the usually raring to go Agent May. She is slightly distracted, no doubt, by her discovery the previous episode that she is, in fact, not Agent May but is a duplicate Agent May LMD. Understandably reeling from the discovery, since she probably still feels like she’s…well…NOT a machine, she covers with May-like support of Coulson’s plan at the end of the clip.

This certainly sets up quite a bit of story following it but, aside from May’s presense, it doesn’t really fold into the LMD subtitle of this season. At least it doesn’t fold in obviously, perhaps the LMD subtitle refers to more than just Aida, encompassing the May (and perhaps other) LMD.

The best, most appropriately-timed, line in the clip belongs to Talbot while warning Coulson of becoming involved in Washington politics:

This is politics, Phil. Which means politicians. They are a festering cesspool of toxic-waste fires. You swim in those waters, you could get pulled under.

Oh, that Talbot-subtlety.

This episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday at 10/9c.
