One of the best elements of Jessica Jones‘ first season was the villain. David Tennant played one of the MCU’s most interesting villains as the mind-controlling Kilgrave. However, unlike Daredevil‘s Kingpin, he did not end up behind bars but forced Jessica’s hands as she took his life in the last season finale. Surprising many he does not seem to be the kind of character to die so easily, as he was confirmed to return for the private eye’s second season. Little was known about how much we will be seeing the character, but showrunner Melissa Rosenberg gives us a good hint at how he will play into the upcoming season.
*He’s such a part of her construction and her dilemma. I think just having him come back and be that mirror again is really important.**
The recent first look at the upcoming season provided by Entertainment Weekly promised a much more personal story this time around, as she tries to uncover how exactly she got her powers. After the events from The Defenders, she is stuck once again facing her own demons, which would naturally bring back the biggest one from her past. It may be quite an interesting dynamic, as the largest villain she might be facing is a voice in her head. The way Rosenberg points to him being a darker reflection of her might be a hint that her largest inner turmoil will be facing her own actions from the episode “AKA Smile”. If the rumors are correct and she is forced to face an adversary like Typhoid Mary, she might be confronted with her own actions from the past. No matter what may happen, it is fantastic to see such a great actor like Tennant return to the franchise and he may bring us some more memorable moments. The only question remains, is he truly the only character that will return to haunt her?
What are your thoughts on his return? How do you think he will play into the story?
