SDCC brought us the good news that the last of the four DefendersIron Fist, was finally renewed for a second season. This left the door wide open, as the only real piece of information we got was the addition of a new main cast member, as Luke Cage‘s Misty Knight will join the cast. One major question was left open if Scott Buck would be returning as showrunner. Given the show’s negative reception and his current focus on finishing Inhumans, it seemed to make sense that someone else would take over. It is now official, as Raven Metzner will be taking over the role.

Metzner has quite a history, as he worked on ABC’s drama Six Degrees, took over as Executive Producer on FOX’s Sleepy Hollow and was a consulting producer on Heroes. This does put him at an advantage, as Sleepy Hollow had a lot of more mythological elements. He also has a background with Marvel, as he was co-writer on the Elektra film, which was a spin-off of the original Daredevil film back in the day. Jeph Loeb had a lot of praise to give the showrunner.

“Raven’s love of all things Iron Fist and his extensive knowledge of martial arts films made him the perfect choice to continue telling the adventures of Danny Rand and Colleen Wing. Season One and The Defenders are only the beginning of this fantastic action packed tale.”

It seems they found someone who has a lot of love for the character and while some would consider the first season to be a mixed bag, it does offer itself as a good foundation for the show to build on. With The Defenders wrapping its first season, the character has fewer restrictions put on him. Hopefully, the show will tackle more aspects of the characters mystical elements and with Metzner‘s love for martial arts, we can hope for some more creative action sequences this time around.

What are your thoughts on it? Do you like the new showrunner?
