James Gunn has always been great about interacting with fans via social media. From impromptu Facebook Live Q&As to responding to questions via Twitter, the Guardians of the Galaxy director has it covered. During a Facebook Live session back in September, Gunn gave us some insight into when we might expect seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (“in a little under 3 years”), something he recently reiterated during a Twitter session with some fans noting that it was his dream film and we will, in fact, be seeing it in 2020!

This is as close as we’ve gotten to confirmation of the film’s release date, though we fully expect it to fill the May 1, 2020 date. Given that it’s the one 2020 film about which we’ve been the most certain, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we get an official Marvel Studios announcement BEFORE this years San Diego Comic Con.

While Gunn isn’t giving us an exact release date or a copy of the treatment, we do get some nice insights into what the director is thinking. Many fans, us included, have wondered what impact, if any, the Fox deal might have on Vol. 3 given Gunn’s comments in the past about certain characters that would like to use but could not because Marvel Studios did not hold the live-action rights. In that light, it’s interesting to note that it seems like he’s got his mind made up about the story he’s going to tell and that any characters he may be able to add as a result of the impending purchase will not change that story.

We’ve known that Gunn has taken inspiration of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s acclaimed run on the Guardians, so it’s no surprise to hear him bring them up again, but it might be helpful for fans looking for some clues to the script to dig back into those comics one more time.

This last tweet, while again not NEW news, is still good to hear. We’ve been hoping to hear more about Rocket and Gunn has promised us that it’s coming. While Gunn hasn’t directly said we’d find out how Rocket became Rocket in Vol. 3, it’s certainly been heavily implied and with so much development having happened around Quill, Gamora and Drax over the last two movies (and some in the next two Avengers films), it seems like this film might be Rocket’s!

Stay tuned for further developments on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, set for release sometime in 2020!
