Well, that was debunked fast. At last night’s European Gala to celebrate the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it appeared that Zoe Saldana may have revealed what has recently been Marvel Studios’ best kept secret: the real title for Avengers 4. Many fans were quick to point out their belief that Saldana was either mistaken or misleading, but without confirmation, we couldn’t be 100% sure. Thankfully, James Gunn, who has always played it straight with the media, settled the matter definitively.
“It’s not the title,” said Gunn of Saldana’s reference to the 4th film as “Gauntlet.” “My guess is that Zoe just misspoke,” he continued. “I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ instead of ‘Infinity War’.” And while it isn’t an explanation that’s going to satisfy everyone, it’s the one we are going to get.
Looks like Saldana is off the hook. Many fans, myself included, questioned how “Infinity Gauntlet” could have been considered a spoiler, given that it seems the obvious conclusion to the Infinity Stones saga is that Thanos collects them all. It’s good to know that we can keep speculating and making things up until the title is finally revealed (I still think they hope to wait until the credits roll for Avengers: Infinity War).
