When it comes to anthropomorphism in the MCU, James Gunn is the king. I may still never fogive him for making me have so many feelings about Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He has even brought a tree to life, making it one of the most loved Marvel characters, even though he only ever says the same three words.

But Gunn is a fan of at least one other animal-based character: Howard the Duck. Howard has had a cameo in both Guardians films, but it has been just that, a cameo. Fans couldn’t help but think that those cameos could be a signal of something to come down the line. Early winks to properties that will take the spotlight are common for Marvel Studios. This week, it was confirmed that fans saw a young Peter Parker years before Marvel had rights to Spider-Man.

Gunn keeps an eye on what people are saying about him (Hi!), so when somebody on Twitter this week suggested that there was talk of a Howard the Duck movie, he was quick to respond.

He went on to dispel these rumors, pointing out that there is a limit to how much magic he can create in the MCU.

While fans would love to see what he could do with the character, Gunn is busy enough creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he has already drafted. The development of the movie takes about three years of the writer/producer’s life, so if there was even a glimmer of hope that he was making Howard the Duck happen, it would be very far in the future (or in the hands of somebody else).

If somebody else were to give us Howard’s story on screen, who would you like it to be, and where would you like it to go? Give us your ideas, in the comments! Meanwhile, we’ll just put Howard the Duck up on a shelf with the Black Widow movie that fans want.
