In 2014, Marvel released what many thought would be their riskiest property yet. Little did anyone know that Guardians of the Galaxy would turn into one of their biggest films, leading to growing requests from fans to see more of these characters. In fact, Marvel was so happy pre-release with what James Gunn had dreamed up, that they announced the sequel days before it’s theatrical release.
Ever since that point, Gunn has been working hard on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and went on to start production on the film earlier this year in Atlanta. During his break from filming today, Gunn took to Facebook to have a Q&A with fans that unsurprisingly turned into a lot of questions about the film.
One bit that he did reveal is that the film is scheduled to wrap principle photography in June at Pinewood, which is right around the same time that the Spider-Man reboot should start filming. That leaves Gunn with between two and three months to complete the next installment, and then continue on for the following ten months on post production and promotion. It’s easy to see how much time this franchise has required of him over the last four years or so, and it’s possible he is reaching the point of needing a break.
He has previously said that his desire to continue on will depend on how he feels following this film. Now during his Q&A, he says that talks are happening but he wants to finish this movie before committing to a longer stay.
Right now I really am just concerned with doing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I’m not sure what I’m going to do after this… Marvel has talked to me about continuing on. I’m not sure if that’s what I want to do or if that’s not what I want to do. I really just want to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the greatest possible movie that I can, and something that’s as honest and sincere and true as it can possibly be.
Luckily for Gunn and for us, he should have plenty of time to take a much needed break following Vol. 2 as we will not be seeing a third Guardians movie until at least 2020. If the Guardians do crossover with the rest of the MCU for Avengers: Infinity War, Gunn would likely be asked to help with their integration. Since he has expressed such love for these characters, he would probably want to do this anyways, but I could see an agreement taking place where he helps out with Infinity War, gets a break until 2019, and then works on a third installment.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters May 5, 2017.
