As the LMD story arc on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wraps up with tonight’s episode, ‘Self Control’, and the show is already gearing up for the last story arc this season. Show Co-Runner Jed Whedon, Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennett previewed the next pod during a set visit by IGN. Bennett was forthcoming in regards to the theme of the next pod, hinting at how it may be influenced by current events.

“This next pod is very relevant. It’s definitely a theme that I think has been kind of hopping around in pop culture at the moment. But it’s kind of like a fun Marvel take on that. For all those people who wished to see these characters in a different light, this is going to be the time for that to happen.”

The show has veered into thematic tones that parallel current events this season, such as the subplot regarding Inhumans with Senator Nadeer. (Parminder Nagra) Clark Gregg and Jed Whedon also clarified that the next pod would pay off storylines that had not been resolved in previous seasons. Gregg teased that HYDRA would return in a manner that would “surprise the crap out of people.” This may indicate that despite HYDRA’s seeming defeat again during the Hive arc, the organization is still active. In addition, Jed Whedon was asked if the Gravitonium plot from season one would ever be referenced again, to which he replied:

“We would not be doing our jobs as well as we could if we left that unanswered. We move so fast and we move past stuff, but when you get that thing that you care about called back to, there’s a reward there that you deserve. For us, it’s fun to play in that world. These were conversations that we were obsessed with and that we bent our minds into pretzels over two years ago.”

Graviton has been one of the shows most glaring loose ends to date so Whedon’s quote will surely excite fans. The Gravitonium along with Franklin Hall were last seen in the possession of Ian Quinn (David Conrad) and Raina (Ruth Negga) as they parted ways with HYDRA. While Raina later appeared during the Inhumans arc, Ian Quinn was not seen or mentioned since. With HYDRA looking to make an appearance for the 10000th time in the series, it may be possible that Quinn may be recruited into the organization and we will see the resumption of the Gravitonium experiment that gave Franklin Hall his world-shattering abilities in the comics.

The next Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4×15 ‘Self Control’, airs tonight, February 21 at 10 PM on ABC. The trailer for this episode may be viewed here. What do you think of Jed Whedon’s comments? Are you excited for the return of Graviton? Let us know in the comments below!
