Devin Faraci wasn’t done with his earlier Marvel scoop. According to Badass Digest, Captain America helmers Joe and Anthony Russo have officially signed on to direct both parts of Avengers: Infinity War.
According to Faraci, an announcement is imminent and the deal was just closed, with his source finding out earlier today.
I remember thinking this was a no-brainer when Devin first reported on it in the fall. Joss Whedon was stepping away and the Russo brothers has really acquitted themselves well with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With Captain America: Civil War beginning production in just a couple of weeks, the Russos will have their shot at an Avengers-sized movie and I’m telling you right now, they’re going to kill it. They really seem to love the characters and the universe and respect the process. In a lot of ways, Captain America: Civil War is a bigger event for me than Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Faraci went on to report that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in talks to write the scripts and that is no surprise either. Markus and McFeely are as much a part of the DNA of the MCU as anyone, having written Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and Agent Carter (both the One-Shot and the series), and keeping a winning team together always seems to make a lot of sense.
This will keep the Russos pretty busy over the next few years. Production on Captain America: Civil War is expected to run from April until August of this year and, as Faraci says, that film is heavily tied to the Infinity War films. Those films, which have been rumored to film back-to-back, should begin filming sometime in late 2016 or early 2017 and will require a ton of editing and post-production. Looks like the Russos will have just enough free time to take on that solo Spider-Man film for Marvel and Sony!
