Marvel Studios has always had a villain problem. Throughout the films, we’ve had an abundant number of forgettable half-assed villains and a small number of compelling ones. It’s an issue still present these days, frustrating some for the lack of compelling villainy, and it will likely still be one in the coming films given the MCU’s mantra of truly focusing on the heroes but with one particular exception according to the lord and savior of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige:
Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.
If there’s one villain that truly needs to stand out from the MCU in the among the ranks of iconic blockbuster villains, it’s Thanos. Infinity War will have us likely seeing him go on his Thanos Quest, pursuing the stones for real this time so it only makes sense that his character would be made a priority this time around. With a tragically violent backstory that turned him into the Mad Titan he would be known for and his obsession with Death, Thanos is undeniably one of Marvel’s most layered villains. Feige’s comments are a breath of fresh air and give fans hope that we may get something as compelling as Thanos’ comic counterpart.
On an unrelated note, I’d sure love to see Thanos round up a cavalcade of lieutenants for himself and have them be written well. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a group of minions stand on their own against the protagonists. Imagine seeing the Black Order standoff against the hard hitters of the Avengers.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in May of 2018.
