James Gunn has just took to twitter to confirm the report that the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy has a new title.
Yes, the official title for the @Guardians sequel is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Nice detective work, @colliderfrosty, etc! You got us!

You can read the original report below.
Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to come to a close in a few weeks once Ant-Man hits theaters. Phase 3 figures to be even bigger and more connected than anything we have seen before from Marvel. They are introducing new properties, but also bringing sequels to beloved franchises, such as last year’s hit, Guardians of the Galaxy.
We’ve known for around a month that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will likely not be the official title after James Gunn posted this picture. The picture led to a lot of speculation on what the title could be, but many figured we would not know until the film started production next year. However, it looks as though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige may have accidentally revealed the actual title for the sequel while promoting Ant-Man.
Collider recently asked Feige when the sequel will begin production and here is what he had to say:
We start shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 in February-March 2016.
Does this mean that the sequel is actually titled Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2? It is possible even if Feige was “noncommittal” in confirming this after making the statement.
This title works on a number of levels, and something we at MCUExchange thought would make sense. Calling the sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be a great nod to the soundtrack of the movie and Peter Quill’s last gift from his mother.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit theaters May 5, 2017.
