As the release of Avengers: Infinity War is coming closer, many wonder what this could mean for the future of the franchise, as it feels like the end of an era. Phase 4 is a massive question mark and many wonder what possible direction they could be heading in. Fandango interviewed Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige on exactly that topic to find out what the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look like as soon as the battle between the Avengers and Thanos comes to an end.

“I think it’s a little early to know what it’s going to look like. I think things are going to look very different at that point, but I think the early discussions we’ve had with James [Gunn] about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the ‘Cosmic Universe’ and the Guardian characters is very exciting. Which is why he signed up and we announced that even before Guardians Vol. 2 came out.”

It is rather interesting to see the strong emphasis on the more cosmic side of the universe. So far, many stories took place on earth and even the more outlandish character of Thor spend most of his films visiting Midgard. The success of Guardians of the Galaxy has shown that they can potentially venture into newer stories, which is showing with its sequel and the much anticipated Thor: Ragnarok. There are already hints that Captain Marvel would become the bridge between earth and the cosmic side of the MCU. Feige does hint that one of the post-credit sequences of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would set up something that could lead into the “new age” that is Phase 4 and beyond.

“As you know from the comics, there are so many places to go and so many more characters, and there are a few characters hinted at in the [end] tag scenes of Vol. 2. All of which could be potential to see and explore more in the new age following our big Avengers films.”

This is quite an exciting prospect and could explain why Vol. 2 has five post-credit stingers. There are also hints that one of them might introduce an important character moving forward that could tie into this new age. Maybe we will see Captain Marvel make an appearance, perhaps Adam Warlock is teased in some shape or form, or we even get a tease of a potential Phase 4 villain that could compete with the threat that is Thanos for Phase 1 to 3.
