As Thor: Ragnarok has gone through the production process it has become apparent that some part of the film will feature elements of the “Planet Hulk” storyline from the comic books. Marvel essentially confirmed this by putting Hulk’s gladiator armor on display at ComicCon this year. Now, director Taika Waititi is dropping more hints at other “Planet Hulk” elements coming.
For those unfamiliar, Korg is an alien from the Kronan race who fights alongside Hulk as a gladiator and freedom fighter. Eventually, he also comes with Hulk to earth during the later “World War Hulk” storyline. The bond between Korg and Hulk is strong. This film would not be the first time that Korg, or at least some Kronan, appeared in the MCU as Thor seemingly fought one at the beginning of Thor: The Dark World.
Given the Dark World appearance, Korg’s presence in Ragnarok has been a highly anticipated and rumored possibility. All signs are that Waititi will give the fans what they want. Korg’s presence also points to just how integral a “Planet Hulk” storyline will be to the overall plot of Ragnarok. Some fans will be disappointed that Hulk will not have his own standalone movie based on that major comic story, but this is a smart workaround for Marvel. Producing a Hulk standalone movie is difficult given some sort of contractual mess involving distribution rights. So, using a major Hulk story as part of a Thor film is an easy way to give fans what they want without having to rack up the legal bills or lose profit to Universal Studios.
Thor: Ragnarok starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins is scheduled for theatrical release on November 3, 2017.
