Now that the post SDCC news is starting to slow down just a bit, we have a new update for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Although they had their very own panel at Comic-Con this year and have just begun filming season 4, they did not reveal too much about the upcoming season, with one exception. That exception of course is the inclusion of Gabriel Luna as the All-New Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes. With the cast being back from Comic-Con now, they have resumed filming on the fourth season, and in doing so look to have added a new face to cast.
Deadline is reporting that Lilli Birdsell has joined the cast in a recurring role. Details on her character are brief but they described her with the following statement,
Birdsell will play Lucy, a beautiful woman with a haunting quality. She has a very violent streak in her inner self, because of things that have happened.
From that short description, her character could be the new enemy that S.H.I.E.L.D. goes up against this season. We know they are going to shy away from being so heavy handed with Inhumans this season and possibly delve into some darker material and stranger corners of the universe that Ghost Rider will provide. Birdsell’s character being described as “haunting” and “violent” could open up the door to the supernatural if they are willing to go that route. The showrunners recently talked about the effect that Doctor Strange could have in this universe, and jumping on board with that could help them be relevant in terms of what else is happening in the world.
With season 3 ending with both Hive and Hydra out of the picture, S.H.I.E.L.D. needs some sort of enemy to go up against, because I doubt Daisy will be on the run for long. Lucy could provide them with that villain. We do not have any current ideas on whether or not this could be based off of a pre-existing character from Marvel comics, but if you have any thoughts, share them with us in the comments below!
Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere on September 20th at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
