Recent events in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have not been kind to Mack. Between facing near-death multiple times, losing loved ones, getting emotionally screwed up in the Framework, encountering actual aliens in space, it’s safe to say to that Mack isn’t at an ideal point in his life. That brings up the question of just how close Mack is to calling it quits, walking away from all the burden that’s piling on top of him. Star Henry Simmons addressed this very notion at an interview with Entertainment Tonight after being asked about the character’s personal struggles with SHIELD.
Absolutely. I’d say Mack is the kind of guy, he could step away tomorrow… I know he’s starting to think in terms of a future with Yo-Yo, and yeah, I think he could step away very quickly. He keeps reminding Coulson. He’s ready.
Mack has been the voice of reason in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for several seasons now. While the rest of Coulson’s team goes out of their way to navigate through the audaciously violent circumstances, Mack is always present to spout lines of hilarious bafflement, acting as the eyes of the audience in an increasingly weird and otherwordly show. And with this kind of reluctant worldview comes a sense of disconnect with everything going on. In a team filled with metahumans, spies, master assassins, trained scientists, Mack the mechanic is somewhat the outsider of the group. And with the way things have been playing out emotionally and psychologically for the character – especially in the latest episode – Mack is clearly close to teetering on the edge of throwing in the towel to get away from the craziness of Coulson’s team. If this actually happens later in the season, we can only hope that this doesn’t exclude Simmons from the actual show. We need our Mack fix dammit!
