Last month, it was reported by Variety that Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen was in early talks for an undisclosed role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange film. Since then, things have been fairly quiet. None of the trades have commented on the initial report, seemingly indicating that a deal hadn’t been made as of yet. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that no news is bad news. As you’ll recall, Rachel McAdams was originally rumored to join the cast back in July, before going on record a couple of weeks later to say it was too early to know what would happen. Then, of course, McAdams confirmed her involvement earlier this month when she admitted to The Wrap that her next project would be Doctor Strange.
So what is going on with those Mikkelsen rumors? In a recent interview with MTime, the actor has stated that he’s still waiting on a phone call from Marvel.
“I know as much as the rest of the world,” said Mikklesen of his Doctor Strange casting. “So far it’s been rumors, so I’m waiting on a phone call.”
He also went on to say that, should he get a call for the project, he’d be more than thrilled to take part in it, expressing enthusiasm for both Marvel and Doctor Strange.
“Over the moon.” He added, “It would be fantastic to be a part of the Marvel family. I mean, it’s something we all grew up with. We all have our heroes, and Doctor Strange is definitely one of the more interesting things.”
It’s worth noting that actors typically rumored for a Marvel role will play coy prior to Marvel announcing it themselves, and Mikkelsen could be doing just that, especially as this potential casting came from a legit media trade as opposed to a scooper. It’s also worth noting that Mikkelsen was originally set to play the villain in Thor: The Dark World before having to exit due to Hannibal, so Marvel is clearly interested in bringing him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether it’ll be in Doctor Strange or another MCU film is left to be seen.
