Update: The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Tomei could make her first apperance as Aunt May in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. You can read the original report below.
With Marvel and Sony having finally announced that Tom Holland will play the role of Peter Parker, and director Jon Watts (Cop Car) will helm the solo flick set for 2017, they’re wasting no time casting the rest of the cast. Variety is exclusively reporting that Oscar winning actress Marisa Tomei has been offered the role of Aunt May in the new Spider-Man franchise.
Per Variety, an offer was submitted to Tomei last week for the role. They are not entirely sure how far along the deal is, but with an offer out to the actress, I would expect we’ll hear an official confirmation relatively soon.
With the next Spider-Man film not set to enter production until next summer, it may seem early for Sony and Marvel to begin filling the supporting cast already. However, as Variety points out, they want the actors locked down as soon as possible in order to work out scheduling.
As of right now, there isn’t a writer attached to the solo Spider-Man film, although at the rate things are moving, an announcement can’t be too far off. With Marvel Studios skipping SDCC this year, maybe we’ll get more news when D23 comes around in August.
As always, for all things Spider-Man be sure to follow along here.
