This isn’t breaking news by any means, but it’s nice to get a confirmation on it from somebody in the know. As assumed and reported for the last couple years, we can now confirm that Universal still owns the rights to distribute a solo Hulk movie thanks to an interview with Mark Ruffalo by Collider. Back in 2013 when Disney bought Marvel, they were unable to reach a deal with Universal on The Incredible Hulk distribution rights and it appears nothing has changed over the last 3 years.

Here’s the quote summing up the rights issues from Mark:

As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me.

The distribution rights have always been a common argument for people attempting to crush any Planet Hulk or The Incredible Hulk sequel rumors and rightfully so. Phase 3 is also already booked up with 3 movies a year starting in 2016, so 2020 would be the absolute soonest we could see a new Hulk film.
