Although Marvel has yet to confirm that Mark Ruffalo will return as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok, as originally reported by Jo Blo and later confirmed by the trades, Ruffalo hasn’t bothered to hide his excitement at coming back to the role once again. While at the GQ’s The Gentlemen’s Fund Awards in New York this past Thursday, The Huffington Post had a chance to speak with the actor, and although he didn’t divulge any information concerning what we can expect from Thor: Ragnarok, he did express his joy at coming back into the role we’ve really only seen him in during the Avengers films.
When asked what his role in “Thor: Ragnarok” entailed, Ruffalo joked, “I play Dr. Bruce Banner, and occasionally I turn into a big green, mean monster,” before adding that there’s so much he hopes to explore with the characters.
“I am excited to keep coming back to this role. I see a lot of space for it to grow,” he told HuffPost. “I feel like there’s a lot of cool stuff to explore still, especially the relationship between Banner and Hulk. Hopefully, we’ll see the two of them in a scene together. That would be cool!”
Ruffalo’s appearance in Ragnarok will be the third time that he has portrayed Banner/Hulk, although it’s worth noting that he does have a five picture deal with Marvel. If you add in appearances for both parts of Avengers: Infinity War – which will also begin production next year – that will max out the original deal. However, Ruffalo is willing to keep playing the role as long as Marvel will have him.
I don’t want to overstay my welcome and I hope I never do,” he said. “If I do, I’ll be the first one to bow out.
Thor: Ragnarok, which will be directed by Taika Waititi, is set to begin filming in Australia in June for a November 2017 release.
