For a few months now, rumors have been circulating that the Hulk, who went MIA at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, would return in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. And for a while there, those rumors seemed to prove to be true with Mark Ruffalo stating that Robert Downey Jr. told him he was in the film. It was even reported that Ruffalo had surfaced in Germany, where he was spotted on set of Captain America: Civil War, although no photos ever managed to leak out.

Well, unfortunately, it looks as though those reports are no longer true. Ruffalo himself has confirmed that Marvel is saving the character’s return for another film – although he isn’t sure which one just yet.

“The reason is too great to be revealed in this movie (Civil War),” Ruffalo tells “I was in the script but then they removed my character. They don’t want to reveal where is he and why. I don’t even know if Hulk will be back soon.”

Obviously, with Ruffalo stating that the Hulk won’t be in Civil War now, it’s looking far less likely that the Red Hulk rumors will end up being true. It was said there would be showdown between both Hulk and the Red Hulk, one that would rival the Hulkbuster fight from Avengers: Age of Ultron. With Bruce Banner apparently being saved for a later return, it’s rather clear that will no longer be the case.

With Ruffalo teasing Hulk’s whereabouts, it’s hard not to ponder where Hulk will next show up. For now, though, we at least know not to expect him to return in next year’s Civil War.

Captain America: Civil War will hit movie theaters on May 6th, 2016.
