Marvel has just announced that Martin Freeman has joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War. His role was not disclosed in the press release.

Here is what Kevin Feige had to say about the addition of Freeman-

From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain America: Civil War started filming last week and will kick off Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The cast so far includes Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow/Crossbones), Daniel Bruhl (Baron Zemo), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch), and the newest addition, Martin Freeman.

Due to the fact that Marvel did not make his role official, fans everywhere will start speculating who he may be playing. Freeman could be playing the likes of Norman Osborn, Everett K Ross, and Henry Peter Gyrich.

Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, is one of the biggest players in the Marvel universe. He has battled Spider-Man countless times, is the father of Harry Osborn, and donned the Iron Patriot armor as the leader of The Dark Avengers. With the new Spider-Man reboot coming out in 2017 and rumors swirling that Peter Parker will debut in Captain America: Civil War as well, Osborn is a character that will definitely have a presence in the MCU and Freeman makes sense in the role.

Everett K. Ross is a lesser known character that comes from the pages of Ka-Zar, but makes a lot of sense for Freeman. Ross is the guy people go to for any and all information about Wakanda and has helped S.H.I.E.L.D. out on many instances. He even helped Wakanda prepare for an attack from Ulysses Klaw, who was just introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron and played by Andy Serkis. Freeman is too big a name to have a small role in the MCU and if he is Ross, he could pop up again in Black Panther among other properties. In fact, that is exactly what Devin Faraci of Birth. Movies. Death. has heard.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.
