The Netflix universe continues to expand as Luke Cage has started filming and with that, came our first set photos. Marvel have only officially had Mike Colter, Mahershala Ali, and Alfre Woodard as part of the cast until today.
Marvel has officially announced that Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Theo Rossi as Shades, and Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe have joined the cast and that Rosario Dawson will be returning as Claire Temple. None of these announcements come as a shock as each have been reportedly attached in recent weeks. However, Jeph Loeb and the series showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker spoke briefly about each addition.
Missick’s version of Misty Knight will be “a Harlem police detective who is determined to learn the truth about Luke Cage.” Loeb expanded on this by saying,
We know fans have waited years to see Misty Knight brought to life, so we had to find the right actress. Simone blew us away with her performance as the strong-willed cop on a mission.
Shades is described as “a ruthless criminal with ties to Cage’s mysterious past,” and Coker teased more with,
Theo Rossi is a swiss army knife–no matter what you bring to him, he has a tool for it–and he’s playfully unpredictable. His Shades will be someone you hate to love.
Whaley will be playing “a hard-nosed NYPD detective who partners with Misty Knight in their Luke Cage investigation.” Coker had this to say about his character,
Frank Whaley has a wiry intensity that he’s imbued in Det. Rafael Scarfe. He’s a great counterpart to Misty, and a wonderful actor.
The familiar face of Dawson as Claire Temple will make many fans happy as “Her blossoming friendship with Luke Cage will have a major impact on both characters’ lives.” Loeb is just as happy as we are to get more of Claire Temple,
We are thrilled to have Rosario in another one of our television series. Her performance as Claire Temple in Marvel’s Daredevil was astonishing and we can’t wait to see her shine in Marvel’s Luke Cage.
The synopsis for Luke Cage is currently,
After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.
Luke Cage will reportedly hit Netflix in summer/fall of 2016.
