The casting for Captain Marvel is heating up with several bigger names like Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn jumping on board recently. That Hashtag Show is now offering some more information about characters coming into the film and this time it appears that a classic Marvel character may see his way onto the big screen.
[UNKNOWN MALE] Supporting Lead Male (35-59) Intelligent, but can throw a punch. Open ethnicity. Sounds like he may be tied to a well-known character.
These casting call sheets can always be a bit of a guessing game, but That Hashtag Show is suggesting this has a good possibility of being none other than Rick Jones. Fans of older Marvel comics will remember Jones as being an integral character in the story of the first main Captain Marvel, Mar-vell. For a period of time, the two were connected via the nega-bands. When one was in the negative zone, the other was in the real world. They could switch places using the nega-bands. This led to a very unusual kind of alter-ego in which Rick would disappear from earth whenever the heroics of Mar-vell were needed and then come back when the danger was averted. Already we know that the nega-bands are playing a role in the upcoming film.
Jones could have appeared many other times in the films but has not thus far. He had a period of time working with Captain America and was also close to Bruce Banner. Later, Brian Michael Bendis also featured Jones in part of his Jessica Jones run, albeit in a far darker, more depressing context. (This is a personal fave of my own and would love it if a 90’s Jones appearance in Captain Marvel allowed for the character, older and haggard, to appear later in the Netflix side during a future season of Jessica Jones.) The age of the kid sidekick has largely faded. Robin has been avoided in most recent Batman films and TV shows and Bucky was shifted to an older mentor type character in Captain America: The First Avenger. If Jones appears in Captain Marvel it will be interesting to see how that comes about and the tactic the writers take with him.
Are you interested in seeing Rick join the MCU? Does Captain Marvel seem the right character with whom to introduce him? Do you want to see him in the modern day, 20 years older? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
