One of the highlights of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was the inclusion of Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet, with some fans even considering him to be one of the best villains in the MCU. Russell played well off of Chris Pratt‘s Peter Quill, creating an interesting and realistic father/son dynamic. Russell wasn’t the only one contending for the role. In hindsight, it’s hard to see anyone else filling Russell’s shoes in the role, but several other well-known names were considered for the role. The shortlist for the character featured talent such Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Viggo Mortensen, Christopher Plummer and MCU fan fave Matthew McConaughey to name a few. Now, thanks to a Reddit user, some concept art featuring McConaughey has made it’s way online. You can check it out below!
The photo quality is pretty poor, but it does give us an idea of what Ego could have looked like, and it’s definitely a different look for the character. The gauntlets he’s wearing do look similar in design to the ones that Russell wore in the final design, but that’s about where the similarities end. The final character design was predominantly browns and earthy tones, this conceptual version is straight black with a few touches of silver. This strikingly different character look leads us to believe that the final design for Ego was tailored to the actor. It makes us wonder how different McConaughey would have approached the role, or how differently James Gunn would’ve written Ego had McConaughey taken the part. Don’t get us wrong, we would love to see McConaughey join the MCU at some point, but Ego apparently just wasn’t the right fit for him.
What do you think of this unused design? Do you think McConaughey could fit into a specific future role in the MCU cough Norman Osborn cough? Let’s talk!
