After being treated to two new stills last night, courtesy of a user on Twitter, that featured the Punisher and Elektra, along with a new image of Matt Murdock and Karen Page today, Entertainment Weekly has even more information regarding the second season of Daredevil and the inclusion of both Frank Castle and Elektra.
Punisher fans have been waiting some time now to see their favorite character introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so when it was announced earlier this year that not only would he be appearing in the second season of Daredevil, but that he’d be played by The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal? They were understandably excited. Especially after seeing how the show handled Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) during the first season. While Fisk was the villain of the season, viewers found themselves wondering if he truly was the bad guy. It appears as though that’ll be the same case with Frank Castle in the upcoming second season.
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves,” [Doug] Petrie says. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
Showrunner Macro Ramirez also talked about how they drew inspiration from Taxi Driver and it’s portrayl of Travis Bickle when shaping Frank Castle for the show.
“He has a different moral code,” he says. “Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devotee anything on TV. Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water.”
Although there’s no denying that the first season of Daredevil was more mature than nearly everything to come out of the MCU before it, it was rather tame compared to Jessica Jones, which didn’t shy away from more adult themes. Going into season two, we can expect that to change a bit.
Daredevil season 2 will have more sex as well. While the first season was relatively chaste, season 2 will get steamier as Matt gets closer to Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and then his old college girlfriend resurfaces. You know, Elektra (Elodie Yung), which introduces another antihero into the mix, one that’s very different from the Jennifer Garner big screen version.
As for fan-favorite Elektra? Her reappearance will shake up Matt’s life. According to showrunner, Doug Petrie, she’ll serve as Matt’s “wild” side. It’ll be interesting to see exactly what her presence does to Matt in season two, and if we get to see another side to him throughout the season.
“Matt’s a deeply moral complicated guy and she’s just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have,” Petrie says. “She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s his id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”
Daredevil season two, which recently wrapped, is expected to hit Netflix in April 2016!
