Following the plethora of Doctor Strange goodness that hit earlier today, Marvel Studios also went ahead and release three new posters for the film featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams. The new posters, which you can view below, are just as eye-catching as those before them.
The posters all reiterate the kaleidoscopic-cityscape motif that features so predominantly in the trailer and other images from the film that we’ve seen so far. The extreme angles of the characters on the posters also serve to suggest that things are not what they appear, the improbabilities of this new reality seem to reign supreme, and the impossibilities are endless.
The choice of these three characters for this new batch of posters may say something about their level of importance in the film. While the Doctor’s image is no surprise, given the little information released up to this point on the nature of mcAdams’s Christine Palmer character or the character of Wong, that they have been given solo posters with their image front and center (if a bit skewed) may suggest that these are more than just run of the mill supporting characters.
While Wong is as old a character as Doctor Strange himself, the early history of the character has had him portrayed as little more than a servant to the Master. It was assumed that this would change for the film, but being front and center in a heroic pose in the new poster seems to mean they’ve departed a great deal from the original history.
Christine Palmer is also a character with deep roots in the comics being one of the three main characters of the short-lived comic series Night Nurse waaaaay back in 1972. One of the night nurses, Linda Carter, indeed, the one who took the nom de guerre of Night Nurse later, did have a romantic relationship with Doctor Strange on the comic book side. Given the rumors that McAdams was playing Night Nurse (as considered in this MCU Exchange article) the image suggests a potentially enhanced role (and a name switch to another nurse character…perhaps to avoid using the name of a Wonder Woman actress). Again, like Wong, she’s not only centered in the poster, but her demeanor is heroic.
Grouping these characters in a trifecta with the lead hero in this series of new posters does seem to acknowledge that there are great things in store for them.
Doctor Strange is slated for release on November 4th, and stars some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters like Cumberbatch (Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange), Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Karl Mordo), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Benedict Wong (Wong), and Mads Mikkelson (Kaecilius).
