New Warriors. It’s one of the shows on Marvel’s ever-expanding docket of upcoming properties as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know that Kevin Biegel has been tabbed as the showrunner and we know what characters, along with the cast members that will be playing them.
Up until a month or so ago, we thought the show was going to be a part Freeform, the network formerly known as ABC Family. However, the House of Ideas made a splash when reports surfaced that the entertainment company asked for the rights to the show back so that they could shop it around.
The pilot of New Warriors reportedly tested so well, Marvel wanted the rights back so that they could shop it around again in hopes of — presumably — getting it on a better network. To date, we don’t have confirmation of the place Squirrel Girl (Milana Vayntrub) and company will be debuting in live action. That is, until some news started surfacing earlier today on Instagram.
In an apparent event a Teatro Sony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sony Pictures Television held an event where they went through their lineup for the upcoming season. Lo and behold, along the likes of Shark Tank and Preacher was a logo for New Warriors. Now before I go down this rabbit hole, please note that everything I’m about to say is pure speculation. Got it? Great.
There were two networks under the Sony Pictures Television umbrella that were presenting at this event: AXN and Canal Sony. AXN is a cable network in Europe, Japan, and various parts of Asia and Latin America while Canal Sony is primarily based in Latin America.
What are some of the shows that have appeared on Canal Sony, you may ask? If we’re singling out superheroes properties, Canal Sony has aired Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Inhumans, and Agent Carter. If you’re still wondering where this is going, what’s one of the most common threads between those three shows?
Bingo. They all originally aired on ABC. Strengthening the case, it doesn’t appear shows like Legion or The Gifted will air on the network, even though they are produced in part by the House of Ideas.
It should be noted that a slide for Joe Pokaski’s Cloak & Dagger also appeared at the presentation. Either 1.) Canal Sony/AXN didn’t catch wind of New Warriors being dropped from the Freeform slate and continued assuming they had the broadcast rights or, 2.) New Warriors has been bumped up to primetime on ABC. And deepening the conspiracy a little further, Scrubs and Cougar Town have both aired on ABC. The connection between those shows and New Warriors? Kevin Biegel served in various capacities on both projects.
What do you think MCUExites? Do you want to see New Warriors on ABC or would you rather it end up on a streaming service like Hulu? Let me know in the comments below!
