There are no limits to what Marvel could do on Netflix. The original plan, which was for one season of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and then The Defenders has already grown to three seasons of Daredevil, a second season of Jessica Jones, and a Punisher spin-off. Fans already know that they love Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and it will be a shock if his standalone series isn’t a hit when it debuts next month. While we have only had a glimpse of Finn Jones as Danny Rand, the character is a fan favorite, and Iron Fist is also more than likely set to be a success. With the two new series, we’ll be meeting other heroes outside of the titular characters, including Simone Missick as Misty Knight, and Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing. With every fan-favorite character, there is a cry from the fandom to give that character their own show.
Most recently, there were rumblings about Misty Knight possibly landing her own series. But with a limited number of Marvel shows to be released on Netflix each year, each character with their “own show” means that we have to wait even longer for the other characters to show up in their stand-alone series. Which is why the shows that bring the characters together seem like a great idea for the Netflix wing of the MCU. Heroes For Hire is a classic team up in the comics, incorporating many of the characters that are a part of the Netflix Marvel Universe. Once we meet Danny, Misty, and Colleen, it would be fun to have them team up with Luke, and have a Netflix version of this team.
Many characters (from lead and supporting roles) in the Netflix corner are coming together for The Defenders, but while the team will come together for that mini-series, it’s hard to see Matt Murdock taking on a role where he’s consistently working with a team, and doing it for any sort of compensation. Jessica Jones, however, could come out of The Defenders amenable to the idea of teaming up on occasion (whiskey does usually cost money), or completely fed up with being a part of a team. Either way, we know that she – and Daredevil – will be returning for their own shows, after The Defenders.
Coming from comics, it is common for each character to have their own series. But in television, where there is a limited number of episodes that can be produced a year, the frequency that we will see each character in a stand-alone show is limited. While a date for Jessica Jones season two hasn’t been announced, fans will almost certainly have had to wait two or more years to see her second season. If there are additional seasons of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher, the wait will be almost as long, if not longer.
Bringing Luke, Danny, Misty, and Colleen together as Heroes For Hire would decrease the wait time between seasons (provided that Netflix doesn’t produce even more stand-alone Marvel series, such as Moon Knight) while still letting these characters shine. I’d rather see Luke and Danny together on the screen once a year than wait two years between seeing either of them in their own show.
Do you have a preference for more frequent ensemble shows? Or is there a strong argument for each of these characters having their own stand-alone series? Let us know in the comments!
