Now that Daredevil season two has been released, and we have all watched it straight through at least one time, we can begin looking forward to what else Marvel has planned for this world they’ve carved out on Netflix. Not just to Luke Cage, which is premiering September 30th, or to Iron Fist, which is revving up for production now, but to the time when all of these fine men come together with one hard-hitting woman for The Defenders. While we’ve known that this series was to happen, there wasn’t any clarity as to where in the process of releasing subsequent series of the other shows that it would occur.
Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox, is in Paris for a Netflix two-day event to promote all of their shows. Naturally, while there, Cox talked about The Defenders, which will see Daredevil join-up with Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Finn Jones (Iron Fist), for a mini-series on the streaming network. And while the show still lacks a showrunner – although we have a few suggestions for the folks at Netflix – it appears as though a production timeframe has already been worked out. According to The Independent, at this event, Cox said that The Defenders will begin filming late in 2016, as initially speculated by fans.
Charlie began by stating that there is nothing to announce in regards to Daredevil Season Three.
“We don’t know if there’s going to be a season three,” he revealed to a crowded room of journalists. “I certainly don’t know.”
But he does know a tiny bit about The Defenders.
What we do know is at the end of this year we’re going to be making The Defenders and, of course, Daredevil is very much a part of that foursome.
I have no idea what the storyline is going to be for that show. I’m very excited to see how those world’s combine… and interested to see tonally how those shows become one.
The second season of Daredevil left many loose threads and planted many seeds for future plots. Will we be seeing those in The Defenders?
In terms of wrapping up any storylines, maybe they’ll do some of that in The Defenders. Or maybe they won’t.
With The Defenders filming this fall, we can get a clearer look at the Netflix Marvel timeline. Jeph Loeb has said that there will still be six months between each Netflix series, so without that changing, here is what the wait looks like:
- September 30, 2016: Luke Cage
- Spring 2017: Iron Fist (Entering production this month.)
- Fall 2017: Jessica Jones, Season Two (Writers room is in the staffing stage)
- Spring 2018: The Defenders
This seems like an incredibly long time to wait for material that they will be filming in the winter of 2016/2017, so I personally hope they decide to release shows more frequently than every six months. I feel that about 5 percent of my brain is always contemplating the Netflix Defenders timeline, and crave more information on this than any other Marvel news. What do you think of this order of release? Can we wait until 2018 for The Defenders? Will we all survive until 2018 for more Daredevil? Tell me what you think, in the comments.
