The upcoming MCU films have been announced for a while and the next six films through 2019’s Captain Marvel have been dissected to the best of every fan’s ability and desire.
After that film however, things start to get vague:
- Untitled Avengers sequel (May 3, 2019)
- Untitled MCU Film (May 1, 2020)
- Untitled MCU Film (July 10, 2020)
- Untitled MCU Film (Nov. 6, 2020)
That’s a lot more use of the word “untitled” for many fans’ comfort. The answer, according to what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told the Toronto Sun, may be a simple matter of keeping the spoilers to a minimum:
Where we go after Avengers; what those 2020 films are, we’re pretty sure what those are going to be… but if I tell you that, we’re getting into spoilers.
So, what that likely means is that following events in Avengers: Infinity War, the status quo will be so different within the MCU that the next Avengers film, that untitled 2019 one, may be titled with a name that would give away some event in Infinity War or be titled after some storyline fans may be familiar with from the comics. And the same may apply to the 2020 untitled films which may be named after similar storylines or characters yet introduced.
In other words, “Untitled” may just be the new word for “Spoiler Alert!” A courtesy.
A maddening courtesy to fans, to be sure, but one they’ll likely eventually appreciate.
Feige expanded a little more on what may be in store for the MCU after those 2020 films…but in the most nebulous way possible:
Once we get into 2021, 2022, 2023… it’s the same balance. We want to continue stories in unique ways with characters that we’ve established. There’s facing the crossroads of how to adapt characters after they’ve had five or six or seven appearances. Then there’s choosing the new ones, like Guardians, like Ant-Man, like Doctor Strange… and we certainly know what the handful of those are going to be.
…but, sadly, WE, the audience, do not.
Of all the areas of rampant speculation within the fan base of the MCU films, nothing…NOTHING…gets more screen time than the constant guessing about WHAT’S NEXT!?!?!?!. Feige feels there is one very good reason for that and it has nothing to do with Marvel Studios:
I’ve always said that it is a testament to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and to Jack Kirby and to everyone who created such an amazing pantheon of characters 50 years ago that we could announce, as we’ve done before, our next 10 movies and the first question is, ‘Well, what about this character, what about that one?’
It’s an incredible embarrassment of riches.
Riches the audience benefits from…if not as fast as they would like!
So, let’s continue the MCU’s oldest online game: those untitled films…what do you think they’ll be? What happens in the next Avengers film that makes keeping the title of the Avengers film following it under wraps? And what seems like the most probable films in the post-2020 Phase Four? Speculate below!
