Well this is a bit of a bummer! It was reported last week that Robert Downey Jr. would be reprising his role as Tony Stark for the upcoming Disney+ animated series What If?, but now it appears that won’t be the case.
According to The Wrap, national treasure Jeff Goldblum, who announced that Downey would return to voice the armored Avenger last week, actually misspoke, and Downey will not be reprising the role after all. Goldblum had previously said Iron Man will appear in an episode of What If? alongside his character, the Grandmaster, with Downey coming in to record lines for the character in the near future, but seemingly it will be another actor providing the character’s voice for this appearance.
While this is certainly disheartening to hear, it makes sense – Downey did seem done with the role after Avengers: Endgame, and wasn’t apart of the initial cast announcement for the series. It seems likely Goldblum just assumed Downey would be voicing the character, unaware that he wouldn’t be returning.
As for who will end up voicing the character in What If?, that we don’t know – but the episode he will be appearing in certainly sounds intriguing, and with any luck we’ll know more before too long.
