The folks at Geek.com have been dropping daily exclusives over the past week and they came through again today. Their latest scoop gives a little insight into James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2, which begins shooting next month. If you’re even the slightest bit spoiler sensitive, look away now…
One of the most asked questions of Gunn since the sequel was announced was what characters might be added to the Guardians roster. Gunn has consistently said it wouldn’t be a large number of characters, preferring to keep delve more deeply into the existing characters. If today’s rumor is correct, Gunn has been true to his word, adding only one true newcomer. According to the report, the Guardians’ roster will grow by three: Mantis, Yondu and Nebula.
The addition of Mantis is no surprise. In October the trades broke the news of actress Pom Klementieff joining the cast, with Deadline adding that she would be filling the role of the green-skinned telepath. While it’s unclear what origins this version of Mantis will have, her long comic book history ties in nicely to the Guardians and the Avengers and she could serve as a bridge between the two at some point.
The addition of Michael Rooker’s Yondu to the team comes as a bit of a surprise, given that the last time we saw him he had just realized he’d been duped by Star-Lord, but the first film clearly showed Yondu’s soft spot for Quill and his short memory where he is concerned. Given Gunn’s long friendship with Rooker, it’ll be fun to see how he fits him into the story, but we can likely count on it being something great.
The real surprise here is the addition of Nebula, who will be joining her adoptive sister, Gamora, as a member of the Guardians. Raised together by Thanos, the two certainly don’t seem to have fond memories of staying up late giggling about boys and left the last film on some very shaky ground. Gunn did promise that the sequel would flesh out some more of her story, but I imagine most readers will be surprised to find out she’s signing up for the team given her clearly selfish motivations in the first film.
The big question here is what threat could the galaxy be facing that would incite Yondu and Nebula to join forces with the Guardians? Will this be an uneasy alliance that ends in betrayal, or will they be forced to truly work together in order to survive? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
